Music Meme: Todd Style

Jambo, Good People.

This monday the blog.verse is gettin' it's music meme on! The Assignment: To reveal your Top (b)12 Favorite Songs of All Time. For those of you with the capabilites, radio.blogs would be preferred. For those whoe don't, a nice numbered list with suffice.

Rules:
- An artist is only allowed one song on the list
- Post radio.blog (if you can)
- A sentence or two on why each song makes the list

I've tapped EJ, Honey, KB and Lis to give it a try. Any other takers?

(1) Alexander O'Neal - The Lovers From my favorite album of all time Hearsay, The Lovers was my favorite cut outside of Criticize and Never Knew Love Like this with Cherelle. Alexander is truly an awesome and underrated artist! (2) Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing In between the Sheets is bad, but this song puts the emphatic slam on any "getting your groove on" Cd. It's the Ultimate "get it on" Song and it's utterly timeless. (3) Staple Singers - Lets Do it Again Right after Sexual Healing, this is like an unofficial sequel done by 3 lovely ladies with Curtis Mayfield. Smooth, melodic, and it must've been great the first time, requesting an encore. (4) Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - The Message This was the first song of it's kind and you never forget your first time. Plus the lyrics were straight up in your grill from the refrain about hopelessness and struggle in the hood: Don't push me cuz I'm close to the edge, I'm trying not to lose my head...it was on. (5) Run DMC - Sucker MC's 2 years Ago, a friend of mine, asked me to say some MC rhymes, so I said this rhyme that I'm about to say, the rhyme was def and it went this way...Self-explanatory baby. From Run's first syllables in this song, it immediately takes you back to the originality of the old school. (6) Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype No one outside of X-Clan had ever brought the political noise like these brothers from LI. Plus the music that Terminator-X put out was just plain sick. Damn, I miss me some Public Enemy Booyyyyeeeeeee! (7) Barry White - You're My Everything Lets be real now. It's Barry. And he sums it all up and professes his love to his woman in 3 simple words, and they're not I Love You. (8) The O'Jays - Darling, Darling Baby One of my favorite O'Jays songs. I was a little heated when Pun used a sample from this song in his "I'm Not a Player" hit several years back, but he hooked it up even though it didn't go with the rap. What bothered me is folks didn't know the originator of the sample. How can you NOT know of the O'Jays and this song? (9) Tavares - Never Knew A Love Like This Before I loved this song because like Stephanie Mills track by the same name, and Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle's "Never Knew Love Like This" it pretty much brings everything full circle. You get involved, you fall in love, but it's nothing that they have ever experienced before, and I'm letting the world know about it. Oh yeah, the track is nice and mellow too. (10) MFSB - Love is the Message It was simple in it's delivery, the music was fly, very danceable and it's simply timeless. Even the way it began so laid back and then it breaks into this mellow groove. It's mostly instrumental, but the words summed it all up to a tee. (11) Regina Belle - Show me the Way From the beginning, the way this song starts with the wafting mellow tune until the drums drop and the mellow bass breaks in, this song is on its way. But when Regina's sweet voice begins to hum, thats when I appreciate it that much more as a sweet ode to her lover. (12) Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World You know the man had to make my list. And for years I could listen to any of his albums without hesitation and not pick a favorite, but this cut right here pretty much does it for me and it's not even his best recorded track. But there's something about it that just makes me stop whatever I'm doing, and listen to the melody and the lyrics. Thanks for the MEME TK! Great post.. whoa! Sweet list!!!
