The Spring Break Mix w/ Special Guest DJ: Sean Davis
Since i've been off the grid for a while, people have been asking me when the mix crop of mixes and radio blog are coming out. Well, Most of my music now will flow through the Flowink.com Brand (http://www.flowink.com). Drop by over there for hte hottest online mixes on the web. PERIOD. But that doesn't mean i'm gonna leave my site high and dry. I'll be posting some exclusive playlists from time to time. And I'll also enlist the help of my friends! Many of them have DEEP CRATES and aren't afraid to share the wealth. So here's the first of (i hope) many from my boy, Sean Davis out of the Bay Area. Enjoy:
THE SPRING BREAK MIX VOLUME i: [ STREAM / DOWNLOAD ]
Here's a little of what I'm listening too and why. I hope you enjoy it.
Moses Theme - Frankie Blue"
This song (and soundtrack) has eluded me, no lie, for 15+ years. Taken from the movie "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh" featuring Meadlowlark Lemon, Dr. J, The 1979 Laker squad and cameo's from various other stars. This semi-slapstick but entertaining film had one nicest and hardest to find soundtracks of it's time. Take a listen to the song and judge for yourself whether or not it's "timeless"? If you don't think so, well, I still say check out the movie. You'll get a laugh or two for sure.
Something's Missing [Live]- John Mayer Trio
I've outgrown much of the ‘popular music" scene and unfortunately don't catch some of the true talents that arise from the ranks. Ever since John Mayer dropped his first big Hit "No Such Thing" I couldn't deny this kids writing and playing ability. He's now released a rock/blues album with his own trio. Here's a little something from a guy who really enjoys what he's doing.
Joyful Girl - Soulive (Feat. Dave Matthews)
In regards to music, I think I'm a little partial to "simplicity". It's often times in the simplest songs can you focus on each individual instrument, chord or beat. I've been amazed by the group "Soulive" for years, particularly after I had seen them perform live. "How they get all that sound out of just 3 instruments"? Anyways, combine them with Dave Matthews and ‘you get "magic". I try not to say this too often since I enjoy music so much but this is hands down just one of my favorite songs.
Pure Gold - Earth Wind & Fire
I had been hearing rumors that EW&F were back in the studio working with various artists on a new album. Wasn't sure what to expect with cameos from Raphael Saadiq, Floetry & Will.I.Am, but they remained very true to their sound. Really good album to check out and one of my best for 2005.
Do You Remember - Kindred The Family Soul
Really nice cut off their "in This Life Together" album. Although, I probably didn't give them enough of a chance, I totally slept on their first effort (album) but I'm enjoying this one. Soulful, with a "gospel'" feel, Kindred really relates family situations well in their songs pretty well. Check out the cut "Sneak A Freak" and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.
(You Caught Me) Smiling (Feat. Cee-Lo/Big Boi/Scar/DJSwift)
The latest album ""Creative remakes of the original Sly & the Family tracks. All due respect to all the artists that contributed but I personally preferred the originals. I liked the bounce and feel of this track though and just had to add it.
She Wants 2 Be (Feat. Vee)
I've ALWAYS been a Jazzy Jeff fan and as of late I'm just really beginning to grasp and appreciate his producing abilities. This track is from his latest project called "The Soul Mixtape"; a compilation of songs, each unique in sound and blended together as only Jazzy can. I suppose you could consider this his own Bloglist. When you get a chance to hear the mix tell me if you can pick up the Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin (remake of "Daydreaming") flow. I suppose you may even say this song sounds a little like Stevie too (you just gotta love the breakdown at the end) They say emulation is the highest form of flattery. My applause to all the artists & of course Jazzy Jeff.
Change it All - Goapele
A fellow Bay Area native Goapele, shocked the world (or at least me) with her single "Closer" back in 2002. She returns to the airwaves to bless us with her socially conscious stylings. Although a little repetitious sounding (to me) at times, I do love her voice and enjoy the album not to mention appreciate the commentary.
How Could I - John Forte (Feat. Esthero)
One of the beautiful things about the internet is the many ways to expose oneself to groups/artists and/or sounds you may not of given any attention to otherwise. I never heard of John Forte but after browsing a Esthero fan site (http://www.alwaysontherun.net/esthero.htm), I began to look for him a bit and came across this song. Seeing the lyrics to the track to makes realize how talented a poet Esthero is as well. But since this is a song by John Forte, let me embellish on him a little bit. Never knew he was part of the Refugees (Fugees camp nor did I know he was close to Carly Simon (surrogate Mother) and is currently serving a bid in prison. I wish you the best bro.
Beautiful Lie - Esthero
From one of my favorite songs of all times to one of my favorite songs of 2005, Esthero delivers. I personally was a little concerned after hearing the EP of this album; thinking that I would be disappointed. I'm sorry "E' for doubting ya! Keep doing what you do sugal!!! Hope to catch you in the Bay some time soon!
Clearly - Anthony Hamilton
Man, I just like this cat's voice. Sounding a lot like a combination of different folks from the past and he's developed a sound all his own.
Won't You Stay (Feat. Debbie Nova)
Although much of the "Smooth Jazz" genre has been dealt a bad rap, Norman Brown always seems to be a little outside of the box (to me) with a more R&B, soulful sound. The album includes appearances by Michael MacDonald, Chante Moore & Mikki Howard, but I really enjoyed this cut.
Enchanted Lady - Milt Jackson
Besides being the sample used by De La Soul "Dinninit", it's just a nice piece to listen & chill to. Then again, when you're recording with artists like Joe Sample, Ray Brown & Wilton Felder what more can you expect.
Black Gold of the Sun - Rotary Connection
I deliberated hard about adding this to the ending. I was originally going to use the Nuyorican Soul version of this same song but in the end, I just couldn't pass up the remarkable Minnie Ripperton.
