BIG THINGS from the Dayz Of Wayback

Recently, I realized that i've been doing this radio blog / podcast style records for about 15 years. Back my college days, my boy in LA had a pirate radio station. So he asked a bunch of us to provide some programming. I did a the DJ La-DI Tee show, which was pretty much the same show as BIG THINGS, just a little more rough.

I'd sneak into a small studio we had near the radio station and I'd record my own shows to send for airplay. I had a small following for a hot minute... my 15 minutes of fame.

The group of files below are all that's left of my collection. I believe i did clost to 50 shows between 1990 and 1995, but most of them were damaged on cassette tape or mistakenly taped over. So take a listen and let me know what you think. Keep in mind these are off of tape and the quality in some areas is pretty bad. I keep marveling at my musical choices. A lot of these song i never really thought of again until i heard these shows. In any case. Enjoy the silliness....

South African Heaters!!! By Way Of Msaniixl.com

msaniiXL.jpg

My man "D" over at http://msaniixl.com dropped a SICK radio.blog of South African Hip-hop on his blog. Wifey, being from Cape Town, South Africa immediately recognized a lot of it and rocked it through and through. Personally, I was blown away by the production value. I can't tell you how many times I was disappointed by International Hip-Hop because I wasn't feelin' the beats. But my man "D" but together a burner!!!!

Rock this sh!t, b!tches!!! It's a burner!!!

And stop over at http://msaniixl.com. There's some hotness goin' on over there!

Artist Spotlight: De La Soul

dela.jpg

Well, it's been a hot minute since i dropped an 'Artist Spotlight'. The truth is, I've run out of artists to spotlight. Well.. that's not entirely true. There's still A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul... but Tradermike did such a dope job with his Native Tongue Radio.Blog, that it didn't seem neccessary.

But a'las, me and my boy Sean were talking about, and we got amped. So, I'm doing De La this week and he's doing a guest spot with Tribe next week. Now be warned. ALOT of your favorites might be missing from our blogs. The reason is there's so much good stuff, that it's impossible to put 'em all on. So, we're going under the idea of "if you were stuck on an island and could only bring 20-25 artist songs, which ones would it be?"

In any case, i love De La Souil. I have since the days of "Potholes". There pretty much the only consistent group left (that i can think of. Common lost it for a minute but came back. And i'm still waiting for The Roots' comeback).

So here's My Favorite De La Soul Songs Of All Time

Radio.Blog: Hip-Hop Heaters v5 (Mystipied Edition)

Mystipied-Banner2.jpg

Mrs. Kelley is a Hustler, with a capital "H", man.

We did this event "Comcast Cup" in San Francisco, this Labor Day Weekend. Basically, we would be selling her South African meat and vegetarian pies that this 60 Team Soccor tournament, which was suppose to have somewhere are around six or seven thousand hungry people. Uhfortunately, the fates decided to fight against us! For one, the weather was miserable. Cool.. foggy... not the best situation for a soccor event! Secondly. unbeknownst to us, 16 teams (as well as other vendors) has dropped out of the event, due to horrible planning on the promotors part. So when our first day there didn't go so well, it pretty much put a damper on our enthusiasm. Mrs. Kelley may have been frazzled a bit, but she wasn't beaten. She stepped back and refocused our efforts. And on day 2, she flipped it from meat mad veggie pies, to coffee and pastries to compliment the cold weather. Sunday gave us a big influx of coffee and pastry customers!!! Day three brought a mixture of pies and coffee/pastries, and even though the event only had a fraction of the people there for the entire three days, we did a good deal of business! Bottom line is I was in awe of her; how she was quick on her toes and quick with her brain.

So I decide to re-launch my Hip-Hop Heaters radio.blog, with a big shout you to my wife, Yumna and her Mystipied brand (web-site to re-launch VERY SOON)

Ok... all the 'love gushing' aside, I'm dropping some old and new stuff; including some classic enimem flows, some new Little Brother and Kanye West. Also, check out the posse cuts up in there. ENJOY!!!

"Rockin' Beats Beats Beats" - Fu Shnickens

You know... another thing that's getting me about being older, is that the rebellious part of me is slowly dying. One of the things that lets me know that i'm getting older is the fact that I really get annoyed by cursing in hip-hop songs. Not that i'm a born-again prude or anything. I just get annoyed at 'so called' lyricists that need to have a half-dozen muthafuckaz in a verse to explain what they're trying to say. In any case, I'm a beats man, anyway. I enjoy a good lyrical verse, but dope beats are what really get me open. So when I need some background music when I'm working or gaming, I usually pull up some cool instrumentals to rock to.

What follows is my latest iTunes playlists featuring some of my favorite beats. Most notable are Floyd The Losmif, new preview shit from DJ Craig Rip, and the dopeness that is Pete Rock and 9th Wonder. Not exactly for the average radio.blogger, but for those who enjoy a dope beat, check it out.

Instrumentals: Volume 1

Still Luv'Huh... Floyd The Locsmif
Rip-a-lude 1 DJ Craig Rip
You Can Call Me Todd (Moon Man Mix) Big La vs. Todd
Where Edges Meet Noel Zancanella
Unknown Beat #9 9th WondeR
Galactic Soul DJ Spinna
What You Want is? J. Rawls
Goodbye Big La vs. Todd
Rip-a-lude 2 DJ Craig Rip
Strictly Bongo Bent
Lovely Noel Zancanella
The Things I Get (From Loving You) 9th Wonder
Beat Science T-Bob
Song In My Heart Floyd The Locsmif

Ain't A Damn Thing Change Big La vs. Todd
Freestyle Party T-Bob

Artist Spotlight: The Boot Camp Clik

[VH1] Boot Camp Clik are a loose congregation featuring similar-minded underground hardcore rappers like Originoo Gunn Clapaz, Cocoa Brovaz, Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah, Bucktown Juveniles, Jahdan, and Illa Noyz, all of whom are concerned about keeping the music real and on a street level. That meant much of the music on their debut, For the People, sounded a little similar; still, this is the very thing that makes Boot Camp Clik appealing to a certain audience. (what?)

Whatever... Check out the arby, B!tches Artist Spotlight: Boot Camp Clik

  1. Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka ~ Fab 5
The one that set it off.
  2. How Many Emcees (Must Get Dissed) ~ Black Moon
I'm takin' it back, come follow meeeeeeeee!!! When you heard that Grover loop hit, you'd go bananaz!!!
  3. Bucktown ~ Smif-n-Wessun
Boot Camp + Beatminaz = HOTNESS!!! Once again: BANANAZ when you heard that grimy horm loop. You can't tell me you didn't sing along with "BUCK TOWN!!! Home of the original gun clappaz!!! "
  4. Peep My Words ~ Sean Price
If you need proof of Sean P's elevation in skillz, this is the cut the check out. Off of his new joint, he's takin' if old school and just flowin' over a flute-enhances loop. Marvelous...
  5. Chemistry 101 ~ Buckshot
This was the first cut i heard from Buck's new stuff. I flipped when I realized it was 9th Wonder on the beat! CRAZY. "Undaground...."
  6. I Ain't Havin That ~ Fab 5
This was suppose to be the second coming of the Boot Camp. But things just fizzled afterwards. Go figure... Where da Beatminaz at?!?
  7. I Got Cha Opin (Remix) ~ Black Moon
The original was hot. But man!!! When this sh!t showed up with all new Buck lyrics and that Barry sample. Whew!!! You couldn't deny that Buck was the rhymer of the moment. His flow was so together... "Don't front.."
  8. Sean Price (f/ Illa Noyz) ~ Heltah Skeltah
This is possibly the coldest cut I'd heard at the time! True, not a big banger, but the lyrical skillz packed into the one track was incredible. This was some cypher sh!t. This let fools know you couldn't f*ck with the BCC.
  9. No Fear ~ Originoo Gunn Clappaz
Tell the truth. How many of you started singin' along with "Top dawg, top dawg u du year... Top dawg, top dawg u du year..."
  10. Therapy (f/ Vinia Mojica) ~ Heltah Skeltah
Nocturnal is one of my favorite Hip-Hop CD's of all time. This was the radio standout cut. A little light on the ass, but its still had it's pluses. And Ms. Mojica sound nice in the hook.
  11. Who Got The Props ~ Black Moon
The Black Moon cut that started it all. It's cool to see how Buckshot's flow changed after this cut. And it took me forever to find the original sample.
  12. Spliff-N-Wessun ~ Sean Price sidelike the strings in the background...
  13. Calm Before Da Storm ~ Originoo Gunn Clappaz
Tell the truth. How many of you started singin' along with "Top dawg, top dawg u du year... Top dawg, top dawg u du year..."
  14. Slippin' ~ Buckshot
The tightest cut on Buckshot's new "??????" CD. I can't believe how nice Buck and 9th sound together. Hopefully, 9th will lace the rest of the new Bootcamp stuff on the way.
  15. Sound Bwoy Bureill ~ Smif-n-Wessun
An SnW classic. "Boom bye bye..."
  16. I Love You (B---)
    It's a love song...
  17. Place To Be ~ Heltah Skeltah
Another showcase of lyrical skills. "Somebody tell the fat lady she's up in 5 minutes..."
  18. Wake Up Show Freestyle ~ Black Moon
    Self explanatory.
  19. Onion Head ~ Sean Price
Allow me to re-introduce myself... This is the new Sean P anthem. Hot track, too. I'm guessing... 9th Wonder...
  20. Uni-4-Orm ~ Heltah Skeltah f/ Ras Kass, Canibus
Ruck, Rock, Canibus AND Ras Kass?!? Good Lawd!!! You know this had to be a heater. I just had to throw this in cause it's one of my hip-hop dream teams. Classic material, b!tches

Big La Doing Big Things: Episode III

Here's my 3rd show! I'm looking at turning this into a podcast, but i have to be very careful of copyright infringement. It's a new medium and they're looking for a sacrificial lamb to prove a point. so in the meantime, enjoy the radio.blog goodness:

Check It Out: Big La Doing Big Things: EPISODE III
* Songs Contain Explicit Language. Listener Be Advised

  1. Intro*
New intro! Had to do something special the rekick this off. I love the beginning of the that LL Cool J song "Headsprung", so i wanted it to be the foundation of the intro. I like it. Gonna use it!!!
  2. Onion Head - Sean Price*
This song really blew me away! To here Sean Price back in action was dope!
  3. You Don't Have To Worry (Big La Remix) - New Edition
This was something my boy Sean suggested. I love the way this beat goes with the accapella. Nothing real special. Just something to test the beat out. Tell me what you think....
  4. Better Together - Lalah Hathaway
I didn't pick this up because I heard the album wasn't that great. But then I heard this song on the radio and flipped! This is classic Lalah. I need to pick up this CD quick.
  5. Go (Remix) - Common f/ Kanye West*
This was one of my favorite songs off of the new album. And the remix is sick! Just a little more soulish. I'm glad Common's come back from that Electric Circus fiasco. I shouldn't say fiasco. If it was from anyone else, i would'a enjoyed it. But we're talking about Common, B!tches!!!
  6. Love Still Remains - Seal
His "Human Beings" CD is incredible! Not his best selling material, but it connected with me. I heard this was the stuff he made while he was braking up with Tyra Banks. I can hear your pain, dude. I can feel it!!
  7. For The Record - Kaze*
Another 9th Wonder joint that I stumbled on. Kaze's "Spirit of '94" CD is just as on point as all the other Justus League stuff put out. It's a little old, but i just heard it last week, so i'm bumpin' it until it goes out of style. Fo sho....
  8. Slippin' - Buckshot f/ 9th Wonder*
Yep! 9th Wonder again! Are you starting to figure out he's my favorite producer of hte moment?
  9. Paradise Lost - Hasan Salaam f/ DJ Craig Rip
I was vibin' to Craig Rip's instrumental joints back in the day on illmuzik.com. I'd download this beats and put 'em into rotation. A short while ago, he found me when he googled his music online. From there i got access to the new hotness! Keep 'em coming, mayne... Keep 'em coming....
  10. Why (Remix) - Jadakiss f/ Styles P, Common, Nas*
I didn't like the original too much. But what can you do when Nas shows up to bless you with a track? Everybody comes off on this. Common and Nas on the same track... man....
  11. Nobody Knows Me - Aya
Aya was a blessing from iTunes. I didn't know about her until my man EJ Flavors mention her. From there, this cut has been in heavy rotation from day one. The CD is tight. Go cop it...
  12. Bobby James - NERD*
I'm not a big fan of the Neptunes stuff. It all the sounds the same. Saved, the dope Sade remix of "By Your Side", this one is in heavy rotation.
  13. High Powered - Symbolyc and Illmind f/ The Percussionists
The CD "Art Of One Mind" is crazy! When you got Strange Fruit Project, Little Brother, El Da Sensei blessing you, you can't go wrong. Keep your ears open for ILLmind. He's gonna caryy major weight pretty soon.
  14. Hangin' On A String (Contemplating) - Loose Ends
The classic, of course... EJ had to blessing me with this one. Loose Ends? Very nice. If you got a 'Soul Classic' playlist, this one if a manditory essential.
  15. Love Has A Place In Time - Sirius B Project
This is a group Honey hooked me too. Straight up R&B/Soul stuff. More of a Hidden Beach vibe. I haven't got a chance to go through the entire CD, but this is a track that stands out in my ears. Bravo, Honey. I needed this...
  16. Free - Destiny's Child
The ex-girl group leaves us with a small gem. I really dig the chorus of this song. I'm not a big Destiny 's Child fan. But they do dig some of their stuff from time to time

Artist Spotlight: Slum Village

I remember my boy T-Bob asking me " Yo Kid! You ever heard of Slum Village?". I was like "Yeah. I don't like 'em." Well, I was tripping. I was thinking of Group Home (which still is a trip cause i listen to them now and flip how dope the beats were!!). Eventually I heard 'Get Dis Money' and flipped out. It was one of the dope grooves I'd heard in a long time and it brought back my faith in hip-hop. From there, I went of a rage looking for any and everything Slum Village track i could find. And now, they're one of my favorite groups out now.

They've gone through a bunch of roster changes. The most heart-wrenching being J Dilla's departure. But they still seemed to bring the heat. And now with Jay Dee back in the fold (sort of), Slum Village is poised to 'finally' make an impact. You don't believe me? Peep the hits, son. Peep the hits...

When You Here The Birthday Song...

Illustration by: Frank @ Fantasy Beyond

I had to stick my head out of the sand for hot minute to say 'Happy Birthday' to my Bloggin' Mentor, EJ. Although I'm a bit late in posting this, it's still needed. E's the guy who introduced me to the rest of the 'blog verse' and opened my eyes and mind to others online who share the same passion for music that I do. For that, I'm eternally greatful! But sidestepping the mushy crap, I need to put it down "Audio Blogger" style. So the 2nd version of "Big La Doin' Big Things" is all about 'The E'. Happy Birthday, mayne...

Happy Birthday EJ Flavors!!!

Radio.Blog: Big La Doin' Big Things! Episode I

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!

I'm finally back on the right track! The new template is up and working nicely, so i'm kicking off version 18 of my site with my radio.blog style and format. Back in college, I use to do a Hip-hop countdown show for my boy's pirate radio station. So I decided to tweak my radio blogs with the same format. This month, I'm dropping some new Pharcyde and Kanye in the mix. The overall flow of the mix is sweet (if I say so myself). It's an amalgamation of EJ Flavors and Charles Brown's mixes. So check it out. I hope you enjoy!

Artist Spotlight: Redman

I know I said I was done with Artist Spotlights. But I got an email from a 'fan' who said I couldn't go out like punk! I couldn't leave the game without showcasing one of the dopest rhymesmiths in history. And I realized she was right! How can I forget the Funk Doctor Spock!!!?

New Jersey rapper Redman made his initial impact with Whut? Thee Album in 1992. He blended reggae and funk influences with topical commentary and displayed a terse, though fluid rap style that was sometimes satirical, sometimes tough, and sometimes silly. Redman returned in 1994 with his second album, Dare Iz a Darkside, which was a harder album than his debut. Muddy Waters, Redman's third album, followed in 1996; he returned two years later with Doc's Da Name.

Radio Blogged Out? No. Just A Change In Format

Yesterday, I was putting together my next Artist Spotlight (Black Star), when I realized I wasn't feeling it. I was arby'd out! I think I've reached my limit of artists I'd like to spotlight. So I had to back off the whole thing and think about it.

I took a look at my compatriots' radio.blog efforts (EJ Flavors' "Old School Wednesdays" and "Fab Funk Fridays" & Honeysoul's "Artist Spotlights", and "The Listening Booth"), to refine my arby efforts. I came up with just 2 shows I feel like doing:

"Big La's Old School Cypher:" This will basically be an old school Hip-Hop show. I'll showcase popular and rare songs from 1999 and before. I'll also include crate classics and some classic freestyles.

"Big La's Old Soul:" This will focus on old school soul, funk jazz and pop (where applicable).

I'm planning on dropping the first Hip-Hop show this weekend. So stop by and take a listen!

I'm out.

KJMS Hip Hop Countdown (Finale, 1993)

Ok. I need to re post these things in radio.blog format. My first rip from tape was bad (cassette player is old!).

For those who don't know, i'm posting some of my old archived radio sets. I use to do a weekling hip-hop countdown show for my boy's pirate radio station in Southern California. They're nothing special. It's just cool to marvel at the 'musical selections' that i had. Some of them were on point back then. Others... well... Listen and you'll see..

This episode? I'm starting at the end. This is the last show i did. It ended in 1993 with me almost perfecting the format. I'd spen hours in this little booth trying to make the shows tight! Oh well...

Artist Spotlight: Common (Senseless)

Common (originally Common Sense) was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive in an era when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His literate, intelligent, nimbly performed rhymes and political consciousness certainly didn't fit the fashions of the moment, but he was able to win a devoted cult audience. By the late '90s, a substantial underground movement had set about reviving the bohemian sensibility of alternative rap, and Common finally started to receive wider recognition as a creative force. Not only were his albums praised by critics, but he was able to sign with a major label that guaranteed him more exposure than ever before.

With his name popping up in all the right places, Common landed a major-label deal with MCA, and brought on Roots drummer ?uestlove as producer for his next project. Like Water for Chocolate was released in early 2000 and turned into something of a breakthrough success, attracting more attention than any Common album to date (partly because of MCA's greater promotional resources). Guests this time around included Macy Gray, MC Lyte, Cee-Lo, Mos Def, D'Angelo, jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and Afro-beat star Femi Kuti (on a tribute to his legendary father Fela). Plus, the singles "The Sixth Sense" and "The Light" (the latter of which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance) earned considerable airplay. Following that success, Common set the stage for his next record with an appearance on Mary J. Blige's No More Drama in early 2002. He issued his most personal work to date with Electric Circus in December 2002.

Artist Spotlight: The Justus League featuring Little Brother

Founded in 2003 by Justus League member Big Dho, the Hall of Justus Music Group is a multi-media entertainment company that not only specializes in record distribution, but also music production and artist management. Although the label experienced success in 2003 with its debut single releases from L.E.G.A.C.Y. and The Away Team, a common misconception is that Hall of Justus is the de-facto label of the Justus League, and that members of the League aren’t permitted to seek deals elsewhere.

"I never tell anybody in the League that they have to put out records through Hall of Justus; the artists are free to release material wherever they wish,". "The label is just my way of building a foundation and showing cats that as long as they're making good music, they'll always have a home for it here", states Big Dho.

Dho started out as the road manger for Little Brother, but as their popularity increased they had no representation when it came down to handling the business side of things. Working with LB for a year Dho was able to bring his knowledge of the streets and life experiences into the fickle game of the industry. Before he took on the role as manger, he got his first taste of the industry through production. Even though he had other vision outside of LB, he states that "We all can't do music ... someone has to take care of the business". With so many artist being raped by the industry, the Hall of Justus is not only designed to put out quality music for the masses, but to school it’s artist the rules of the industry so that they can achieve full growth within their careers.

The debut full-length albums from the Hall of Justus Music Group, L.E.G.A.C.Y.'s Project Mayhem, and The Away Team’s The Competition, will be available in stores later this year along with Rapper Big Pooh and a 9th Wonder production album.

Mission Statement and Purpose

  • To provide artist with a platform where they can grow more than just a local act, but to provide them understanding of the business and develop them as a national and international artist.
  • It's a Multi-media company in various areas of communication such as production, films, graphic design, television, radio, and promotion.
  • Is not a label that wants to be pigeon holed with one genre, but is open to all art forms of music.
  • Provide the industry with a unique style unlike any other.
  • To have a successful company to provide exceptional product accepted by the masses.
  • To build an artist to prepare them before they enter a major label.

RE:ISSUE: Monday Meme: 2005 Music So Far...

Hello all. Sorry for my lateness! I actually started this thing and I'm the last one to post!!! After a disasterous host of computer problems on Thursday/Friday, I'm ready to put my stuff out there. Peace to everybody who joined in! Here I go.. better late than never...
My Top 10 Singles of 2005, So Far...
Fly Like A Bird Mariah Carey
Girl Destinys Child
I'm Black Styles P
I Don't Need It Faith Evans
Just Friends Big Pooh
Love Is Common
One Thing Amerie
Pillory-Like Beady Belle
So Amazing (feat. Olivia) 50 Cent
Space'N Time Floyd The Locsmif

My Top 5 CD's of 2005, So Far...

"Divine Dezignz #1: Discovery" - Floyd The Locsmif
This is classic material! In the tradition of bbcmusic's "Beat Generation" movement, Flyod puts together some sweet jazz-style instrumentals, sprinkled with a small bit of lyrical content. This is the type of dope sh!t you can throw on in the background and just vibe. It's been in heave rotation for awhile now.
STANDOUT TRACKS: "Still Luv'Huh...", "Space'N Time", "Song In My Heart"

"The First lady " - Faith Evans
When Faith drops an album, I always know i'll find between 2-4 trax and I love. For me, that above average with most music today. Still, seeing her CD up here means it's slim pickings so far! Not to say it doesn't belong. I think this is my favorite Faith album
STANDOUT TRACKS: " Don't Need It", "Jealous ", "Catching Feelings

"Closer" - Beady Belle
Beady came to me like a thief in the night and stole my heart! Well.. actually, my boy Chris dropped it in my lap ("Hey man, check this out. You might like it"). That was the Cewbeagappic CD. and it blew me away. And when I got an advance copy of "Closer", my infatuation continued. Some people complain that it sounds like the last album, but i don't see that as a bad thing. Her voice is incredible and she knows how good she sounds over those melodic tracks. I can't get enough!!!
STANDOUT TRACKS: "Pillow-Like", "Airing", "Irony"

"Sleepers" - Big Pooh
As one third of 9th Wonder's "Little Brother", Pooh's laid "back" flow, always seemed to take a "backseat" to Phonte's unique delivery. And when Phonte teamed up with Nicolay to form The Foreign Exchance, Pooh seemed to fade into the background. And then BAM!!! He comes back with a solo release that's just as dope a FE's "Connected". You know this will get slept on (hence the title).
STANDOUT TRACKS: "Every Block (f/ Phonte) ", "The Jungle ", "Just Friends"

"BE" - Common
Ah, my love for pre-releases! Being dialed in to the Blog.verse has it's rich advantages! This one's not suppose to drop until late May, but man.... after an incredible disappointment (on my part) with "Electric Circus", I was praying to the hip-hop Gods that Common pulled his train back on track. This is a CLASSIC album! With production primarily by Kanye West and J-Dilla, you can't help but throw this in your collection. I'll be picking this up as soon as it hits the stans!
STANDOUT TRACKS: "Love IS ", "Chi City", "It's Your World "

Artist Spotlight: Run D.M.C.

[MTV.COM] More than any other hip-hop group, Run-D.M.C. are responsible for the sound and style of the music. As the first hardcore rap outfit, the trio set the sound and style for the next decade of rap. With their spare beats and excursions into heavy metal samples, the trio were tougher and more menacing than their predecessors Grandmaster Flash and Whodini. In the process, they opened the door for both the politicized rap of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, as well as the hedonistic gangsta fantasies of N.W.A. At the same time, Run-D.M.C. helped move rap from a singles-oriented genre to an album-oriented one -- they were the first hip-hop artist to construct full-fledged albums, not just collections with two singles and a bunch of filler. By the end of the '80s, Run-D.M.C. had been overtaken by the groups they had spawned, but they continued to perform to a dedicated following well into the '90s.

After a long studio hiatus, the trio returned in early 2000 with Crown Royal. The album did little to add to their ailing record sales, but the following promotional efforts saw them join Aerosmith and Kid Rock for a blockbuster performance on MTV. By 2002, the release of two greatest-hits albums prompted a tour with Aerosmith that saw them travel the U.S., always performing "Walk This Way" to transition between their sets. Sadly, only weeks after the end of the tour, Jam Master Jay was senselessly murdered in a studio session in Queens. Only 37 years old, the news of his passing spread quick and hip-hop luminaries like Big Daddy Kane and Funkmaster Flex took the time to pay tribute to him on New York radio stations. Possibly the most visible DJ in the history of hip-hop, his death was truly the end of an era and unfortunately perpetuated the cycle of violence that has haunted the genre since the late '80s.

Artist Spotlight: Public Enemy, "Yes, the Rhythm IS the Rebel!"

[ALLMUSIC.COM] Public Enemy rewrote the rules of hip-hop, becoming the most influential and controversial rap group of the late '80s and, for many, the definitive rap group of all time. Building from Run-D.M.C.'s street-oriented beats and Boogie Down Productions' proto-gangsta rhyming, Public Enemy pioneered a variation of hardcore rap that was musically and politically revolutionary. With his powerful, authoritative baritone, lead rapper Chuck D rhymed about all kinds of social problems, particularly those plaguing the black community, often condoning revolutionary tactics and social activism. In the process, he directed hip-hop toward an explicitly self-aware, pro-black consciousness that became the culture's signature throughout the next decade. Musically, Public Enemy were just as revolutionary, as their production team, the Bomb Squad, created dense soundscapes that relied on avant-garde cut-and-paste techniques, unrecognizable samples, piercing sirens, relentless beats, and deep funk. It was chaotic and invigorating music, made all the more intoxicating by Chuck D's forceful vocals and the absurdist raps of his comic foil Flavor Flav. With his comic sunglasses and an oversized clock hanging from his neck, Flav became the group's visual focal point, but he never obscured the music. While rap and rock critics embraced the group's late-'80s and early-'90s records, Public Enemy frequently ran into controversy with their militant stance and lyrics, especially after their 1988 album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, made them into celebrities. After all the controversy settled in the early '90s, once the group entered a hiatus, it became clear that Public Enemy were the most influential and radical band of their time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Artist Spotlight:: Ice Cube, The N!gg@ You Love To Hate

Just saw "Are We There Yet?" Yeah... ok... I gotta give Ice Cube his due. He's taken an aging 'rap' career and parlayed it into the lucrative acting gig. A shrewd businessman, he saw the end was near and made sure he had other things to fall back on. And don't get me wrong. I've enjoyed most of his movies.

But I remember the 'real' Ice Cube! "The N!gga Ya Loved To Hate" Ice Cube! The man who would make a track hot by just puttin' his voice on it! His style, his flow, the beats... they were perfect. In the early days of his solo career, it seemed like he could do no wrong! His first 2 and a half CD's were masterpieces. His feud with his former N.W.A. partners was pure marketing genius. And don't forget that feeling of awe and amazement when you saw his face on the front of the The Source announcing he'd gone solo AND he'd pair up with P.E. and Da Bomb Squad for his solo effort!

Man, I miss that Ice Cube! A n!gg@ can't rap forever. And I'd rather to see a 35 year old rising actor, than a 35 year old fading rapper anyday.

So let's remember when the man use to (as my boy Dilon use to say) "Spit Hot Fira!!!"

I watch her sleeping next to me
Innocent eyes closed, yet washing over me.

Soft moans keeping her sleeping; dreaming, about me I’m thinking

Sleeping

She stirs, grabbing me; pulling me close to her

Radio.blog: Another Late Night - Todd Kelley

One of my favorite CD compilations of recent years has to be the ANOTHERLATENIGHT series, featuring chilled out mixes from electronic music's favorites DJ's and Artists (including Zero 7, Fila Brazillia, Rae & Christian, etc.) Each of the artist put a spin on their compilation, and interestingly enough, they were all good.

So I decided that I'd throw my picks into the hat. I've picked out my favorite joints i like the play at 2 O'Clock in the morning when i need to wind down. Check 'em out, boy.

Artist Spotlight: Nas

[MTV.com / Jason Birchmeier ] Heralded instantly as one of New York's leading rap voices, Nas expressed an outspoken, self-empowered swagger that rallied the streets of his city and elsewhere. Whether proclaiming himself "Nasty Nas" or "Nas Escobar" or "Nastradamus" or "God's Son," the self-appointed King of New York battled numerous adversaries for his position atop the epicenter of East Coast rap, none more noteworthy than Jay-Z, who vied with Nas for the vacated throne left in the wake of the Notorious B.I.G.'s 1997 assassination. Such headline-worthy drama informed Nas' provocative rhymes, which he delivered with both a masterful flow and a wise perspective over breathtaking beats by amazing producers: legends like DJ Premier, Large Professor, and Pete Rock; hitmakers like Trackmasters, Timbaland, and Dr. Dre; street favorites like Swizz Beatz, Megahertz, and the Alchemist; and personal favorites of his own like L.E.S., Salaam Remi, and Chucky Thompson. Nas likewise collaborated with some of the industry's leading video directors like Hype Williams and Chris Robinson, presenting singles like "Hate Me Now," "One Mic," and "I Can" with dramatic flair. Throughout all the ups (the acclaim, popularity, and success) and all the downs (the pressure, adversaries, and over-reaching), Nas continually matured as an artist, evolving from a young street disciple to a vain all-knowing sage to a humbled godly teacher. Such growth made every album release an event and prolonged his increasingly storied career to epic proportions. - FULL BIO

The B12 T12 Meme: Now 20% More Mellow Than EJ!

Thursday I put out a call to fellow bloggers to 'MEME' their 12 favorite songs of all time. And it looks like EJ, Honey, Saga answered the call. I'm posting mine late (due to MT issues), but now i'm back in this b!tch!

So check it out: Todd Favorite Songs Of All Time

12. You Will Rise - Sweetback featuring Amel Larriuex
Amel always sounds sweet. And then pair that with Sweetback (who are Sade with the "Sade") and you get a dope cut. The hook stays with you.

11. No Stranger To Love (Want You) - Roy Ayers
I discovered this one when I found out it was sampled for Jill Scott's "Watching Me". And then I listened to the whole cut. Whew!!!

10. I Believe (When I Fall In Love With You It'll Be Forever) - Stevie Wonder
This song is DOPE! To me it doesn't sound like Stevie's style, but it has his flavor all over it. I can't bump this forever.

09. Destiny - Zero 7
The masters of chilled music! I think I heard this played on an episode of some cheesy WB show. I had to hunt it down and found that the album, "Simple Things" became one of my favorite CD's of all time.

08. Someday We'll All Be Free - Donnie Hathaway
It's sad that he didn't get his true recognition until he was gone. This is an incredible song of inspiration.

07. Hear Me - Jazzyfatnastees
The hook in this song haunts me. I can't help was sing along everytime i hear it.

06. After The Dance (Reprise) - Marvin Gaye
The memory tied to this song is I went fishing with a few friends of mine during college. I went on the roof of the houseboat with a patio chair and fished while i blasted this song in my headphones. Love it!

05. Human Beings - Seal
Seal makes 'my music'. An over abundance of strings always appeals to me. Apparently this is the song he wrong after he broke up with Tyra Banks. Now it all makes sense!!!

04. Love Ballad - L.T.D.
This is me and Mrs. Kelley's song. She'd been a big fan of the George Benson version, but the L.T.D. version became 'THE VERSION' for us! Now when we here it we get all mushy! LAME <--

03. Love Is Stronger Than Pride - Sade
This is THE SADE song for me. Minimalistic keyboard with her sweet voice at the forefront. Man, I could just listen to this forever.

02. Will You Be Mine - Anita Baker
Listen to Anita's voice in this song! She rides the emotion of the composition perfectly. Did I menation i love strings and vibes? This song is incredible...

01. Superheroes - Esthero
Did I mention i LOVE STRINGS and VIBES?!? Again, minimalistic stuff here! And Essie sounds so dope. I can never get enough of this cut. It's so simple, yet it has so much soul. I usually set this on loop and let it go.

Artist Spotlight: Jay Dee A.K.A. "The Dilla"

The one thing i love about J Dilla, is when I dig into his production credits and find that he's (unbeknownst to me) produced so much dope stuff, that it's crazy. Example: Poe's "Fingertips", or Bilal's "Reminisce", The man spreads himself out and does it nicely. I remember being turned on to Slum Village and then happily discovering the link between them and one of my favorites, A Tribe Called Quest! AND THEN his linkage to Madlib!!! Who i'd been gigging over, since the days of Madcap and The Lootpack! My man Dilla is one of the most talented producers in the game today. He's one of the few left who can claim to having a 'unique' style, yet somehow keeping it fresh over the years. I've cooked up a hodge podge of work he's done. There's was so much stuff i wanted to put into this blog, but there was no room. There may come a 'part 2', but time will tell

[From BBEmusic.com] Detroit’s Don of the beats, widely regarded as the most important man in hip–hop along with Pete Rock and DJ Premier. Jay Dee is preparing for us a feast of ‘beats and pieces.’ His credentials are such that it reads like a who’s who hip hop and R & B. Slum Village project has the dubious honour of being the most bootlegged band in history, their recent album has met superlative reviews from all areas. Common’s ‘ Like Water For Chocolate’ (produced by Jay Dee ) we’re left with a land mark album, having worked with D’Angelo, DJ Premier, Rahzel, George Clinton, Bobby Caldwell. The Ummah Jay Dee along with Q – Tip and Ali Shaheed, produced Tribe Called Quests’ last album ‘The Love Movement’.

Executive producer on new Erykah Bad LP. Recently produced a track for De La Soul & two tracks for Busta Rhymes

Artist Spotlight: Sisters With Voices

I'm not a big 'girl band' person. 702, Destiny's Child, etc... none of those groups appealed to me. But for some reason, I've always been an SWV fanatic. The 'Sisters With Voices' have been on my list of 'must have' purchase since they came on the scene back in '92. I've learned not try and understand the appeal; just enjoy the music...

With their Teddy Riley-produced 1992 debut, It's About Time, the all-female new jack swing trio SWV scored a string of Top Ten R&B hits that established them as one of the most popular urban R&B groups of the '90s.

SWV (their name is an acronym for Sisters With Voices) is comprised of three school friends: Coko (born Cheryl Gamble), Taj (born Tamara Johnson), and Lelee (born Leanne Lyons). All three vocalists sang in church as children, which is where they learned how to harmonize. A demo tape the group assembled caught the attention of producer Teddy Riley, a former member of Guy and arguably the father of new jack swing. Prior to SWV, Riley helped establish the careers of Jodeci and Mary J. Blige. Riley's luck didn't wear out with SWV -- he helped the group craft their debut, It's About Time, which went double platinum within its first year of release. [FULL BIO @ VH1.com]

Artist Spotlight: The Band From Bristol: Portishead

[Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music.com] Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. Taking their cue from the slow, elastic beats that dominated Massive Attack's Blue Lines and adding elements of cool jazz, acid house, and soundtrack music, Portishead created an atmospheric, alluringly dark sound. The group wasn't as avant-garde as Tricky, nor as tied to dance traditions as Massive Attack; instead, it wrote evocative pseudo-cabaret pop songs that subverted their conventional structures with experimental productions and rhythms of trip-hop. As a result, Portishead appealed to a broad audience -- not just electronic dance and alternative rock fans, but thirtysomethings who found techno, trip-hop, and dance as exotic as worldbeat. Before Portishead released their debut album, Dummy, in 1994, trip-hop's broad appeal wasn't apparent, but the record became an unexpected success in Britain, topping most year-end critics polls and earning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize; in America, it also became an underground hit, selling over 150,000 copies before the group toured the U.S. Following the success of Dummy, legions of imitators appeared over the next two years, but Portishead remained quiet as they worked on their second album.

Named after the West Coast shipping town where Geoff Barrow grew up, Portishead formed in Bristol, England, in 1991. Prior to the group's formation, Barrow had worked as a tape operator at the Coach House studio, where he met Massive Attack. Through that group, he began working with Tricky, producing the rapper's track for the Sickle Cell charity album. Barrow also wrote songs for Neneh Cherry's Homebrew, though only "Somedays" appeared on the record. Around the time of Portishead's formation, he had begun to earn a reputation as a remix producer, working on tracks by Primal Scream, Paul Weller, Gabrielle, and Depeche Mode. Barrow met Beth Gibbons, who had been singing in pubs, in 1991 on a job scheme. Over the next few years, the pair began writing music, often with jazz guitarist Adrian Utley, who had previously played with both Big John Patton and the Jazz Messengers.

Artist Spotlight: MF (to the Mutha f$@%@#) Doom!!!

MF Doom is probably one of the most 'out there' hip-hop artists today. Remember when you first heard De La's "3 Feel High..."? Remember trippin' how bugged out it was and how originally dope it was? Well, that's where Doom is now. The best way to describe his style is like Iron Chief. His production sounds like he was given an odd, random assortment of instruments, samples and sounds and told to build a masterpiece. My man will sample any and everything and make it dope! Granted, his beats and rhymes aren't for everyone. This is some next ish! If you're "crunk" or "ballin'" or whatever, this might not be up you're ally. But if you've been following the game and looking for something more abstract and experimental, Peep METALFACE:

Artist Spotlight: MF to the muthaf$@@#$% DOOM

[Bio by Dan LeRoy , All Music Guide] Patterning his persona and logo after the Marvel Comics supervillain Dr. Doom, the man behind MF (Metal Face) Doom's iron mask is actually Daniel Dumile, aka Zev Love X, a member of former Big Apple hip-hoppers KMD. First featured on the 3rd Bass single "The Gas Face," the London-born, Long Island-raised Zev made his debut with KMD a couple of years later, along with his younger brother and musical partner DJ Subroc. The 1991 album Mr. Hood, released on Elektra Records, was part of a short-lived trend of Islamic Five Percent Nation hip-hop outings, along with efforts by groups like Poor Righteous Teachers and KMD's labelmates Brand Nubian. However, Subroc was fatally injured in 1993 when he was struck by a car, and when Zev and KMD returned the next year, it was with the even more serious and miltant Bl@ck B@st@rds, an album whose cover art alone (featuring a Little Black Sambo-ish cartoon character being hanged) spelled the end of the group's contract with Elektra. With the album in limbo, Zev went underground for five years, "recovering from his wounds" and swearing revenge "against the industry that so badly deformed him," according to his official bio, a reworking of Dr. Doom's origin. Meanwhile, Bl@ck B@st@rds was heavily bootlegged and Zev Love's legend grew, but few knew at first that the rapper who began showing up at the Nuyorican Poets Café in 1998, freestyling with a stocking covering his face, was actually Zev. The imaginative MC finally ended the mystery in 1999, resurfacing in his new identity as MF Doom and making up for lost time with a critically praised new album, Operation: Doomsday, on indie label Fondle 'Em Records. The following year saw the long-awaited official release of Bl@ck B@st@rds (complete with Sambo-style cover art), as well as several singles and an EP with fellow rhymer MF Grimm. In 2001, SubVerse re-released Operation: Doomsday and Bl@ck B@st@rds. A wealth of bootlegs, compilation appearances, mixtapes, and instrumental albums (the beloved by DJ's Special Herbs series) surfaced over the years but no follow-up full-length until Doom introduced his alter ego, Viktor Vaughan, in 2003 with Vaudeville Villain. His team-up with the multi-talented Madlib became Madvillain and their April 2004 release, Madvillainy drew rave reviews. Four months later Venomous Villain marked the return of Viktor Vaughan with the second MF Doom album, MM...Food?, appearing in November the same year.

Artist Spotlight: The Chocolate Boy Wonder

[Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide] Rapper, DJ, and producer Pete Rock first emerged in 1991 as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth, debuting with the All Souled Out EP. A hit LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed before the two went their separate ways in the wake of 1994's The Main Ingredient, with Rock remaining a prolific studio presence prior to the release of his solo debut, Soul Survivor, on Loud/RCA four years later. Dropped from the label, he continued his career as an independent producer, and later signed to Rapster/BBE in 2001 for PeteStrumentals. Two years later, the label released a two-part compilation of mid-'90s LPs with Lost and Found. In 2004, Rock produced the sequel to his debut, Soul Survivor II, with features coming from Pharoahe Monch, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, and former partner C.L. Smooth.

And speaking of Slum, this is off of the elusive "Fantastic, Volume I" (i think. I don't know if it's the original or the remix)
  3. By Your Side (Neptunes Remix)
I really don't feel the Neptunes stuff that much. And this was no exception. But after a while it grew on me and fell into heavy rotation.
  4. Suga sweetums
Not an' official' song. Guess who....

  5. Blue Girl - Q-Tip

Experience The Flow

The best thing about doing a weblog is the tons of people to end up finding that's just as deep into music as you. I hooked up with my man, EJ, who in turn connected me to everybody (Honey, KB, Fresh.... what's up, y'all). This radio.blog thing is massive! This thing is so deep, and we haven't even scratched the surface.

A short time ago, I met this dude, Charles Brown online. He's based out there in St. Louis, doin' his thing. His company, The Flow, is an interactive entertainment service Est. in 1999... majority of their biz is concert production/promotion (clients include: The Roots, Bilal, Dwele, Eric Roberson, Meshell Ndegeocello, etc...)

They also do artist management, marketing & design, promotions, and branching off into internet lifestyle marketing.

After hearing radio.blogs from around the Blogverse, he hipped me to his own stable of music mixes. These mp3 streams are hot, people. You need the new hotness, along with some deep crate ish? Go check out: The Flow @ Flowink.com
FYI: My Extended Mix of Jill Scott's "Free" is featured in the "Sucka For Soul Mix".

And drop my man, Chucky B a line if you feel what he's doin' at cbrown@flowink.com

Throwback Thursdays: Electric Boogaloo

Keepin' in tune with Honey's trip back to the 80's, I had to represent what I remember from back then....

I use to DJ house parties. It would mostly be westcoast, gangsta jams and stuff. But then it would happen!

A small circle would form in the middle of the crowd. Some dude would be pushing his way through with a big piece of carboard. It was the DJ's job to notice this. A battle was a bout to commence. And you had to know what to do. As soon as my man get's his cardboard in place and strikes a pose, you knew what was coming next. I reach into my 'red' crate: that 'special' crate in the back with the 'special' 12" singles. You slowly bring the volume on fader 1 down and drop the needle on your worn copy of Cybotron's dopest single....

"Ready ONE (snap), TWO (snap), THREE (snap) FOU R (snap)....."

On beat!!!! Dude starts ta Poplock; his body going into rhythmic convulsions, as if the drums are hitting him like gunshots! Then theres a smooth transition to back and headspins! And he caps it off with a nice pose.

"Clear... Clear from outerspace.... Clear today..."

That was hip-hop, b!tches.

Artist Spotlight: The Many Faces Of Madlib

[stones throw bio] "Armed with an SP-1200 sampler and several identities, Madlib has built a collection of beats, records, and unreleased tracks that is already becoming impossible to archive.

Beginning in the early 1990's in Oxnard, CA, Madlib's distinctive crate-dug production has formed the basis of LPs for Lootpack, Quasimoto, and Yesterdays New Quintet. And that's just the Stones Throw stuff.

Somehow he's also found time for the other labels doing remixes or guest recordings for the likes of Bilal, Zero 7, Glenn Lewis, Beastie Boys, The Liks, Xzibit, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, King Britt, Jay Dilla, and Blue Note Records."
