The the past few years, I’ve had the privilege to collaborate musically with a lot of artists. I got to work with Artists like TJ Brown and Ramel, and also be a part of groups like The Rhythmteachers and C3. So when this past summer rolled around, I wanted to go back to basics and put together an all instrumental beat project. I’d done compilations of previous tracks, but I hadn’t put any real thought into doing a dedicated project.
Beats from Oakland feels from like ‘Soul Music’ than straight up ‘Hip-Hop’. I guess that comes from a shift in my tastes as i’ve gotten older. The one thing i can say is that this music is ‘me’ at this point in my life.
This is a free download. Please feel free to take it and use it however you see fit. Pass it around, drop lyrics on it, use it as background music on podcasts or videos.. it’s all good. I didn’t make this to be an artists. I made this because i ‘had to’. It’s all been about the creative process, so I hope you enjoy it. One love.
I don’t know how i missed this one this year. Luckily, BamaLoveSoul puts out an excellent newsletter so I don’t miss critical releases. In the latest email, this Planet Asia/Madlib jewel was buried toward the bottom. A nice 6-track EP has Planet Asia spitting over some nice (rehashed) Madlib treats. Definitely worth taking a listen to.
This was on band camp, but was removed. Google it to find it
Last week was a good week for comics. I enjoyed a bunch of releases, bur Uncanny X-Force stole the show. The final chapter in the long running “Dark Angel Saga”, we see ApocAngel’s plans coming to fruition, and the decimate X-Force trying to stop him. Great Rick Remender story and Jerome Opeña art. Now i’m curious on where the series goes.

Boog Brown: “The Brown Study: Remixes”. I loved the original Brown Study so much, I really didn’t care to get this. I thought Apollo Brown produced the project perfectly. There was a real symbiotic feel to Boog and Apollo’s collabo. But when somebody #trended it on twitter, I decided to take a quick listen. After hearing Apollo Brown’s “Detroit”, I immediately downloaded it. It’s worth the money. I’m not on-point with all the songs. Seems like a few were trying to veer into the popular lane. But remixes like “Friends Like These”, “Masterplan” and “Marinate” sealed the deal.

Common: “The Dreamer/The Believer”. I was a bit weary of this coming out. There’s a correlation between musicians who turn actor and lackluster music releases. After hearing ‘Ghetto Dreams’, I thought Common was trying to ‘rough up’ his image and drop more ‘street’ jams. But this is a DOPE album!. “The Dreamer” does a good job of setting things off. “Gold”, “Cloth” and “Windows” are worth the money alone.

Amy Winehouse: “Lioness: Hidden Treasures”. After a year of ‘unreleased’ and ‘remix’ albums from the late, great Ms. Winehouse, “Lioness” feels more like a proper release from her. Although there are remixed/rehashed trax like “Valerie” and “Wake Up Alone”, they are off-set by the incredible Neo-souled “Half Time” and a solid version of “The Girl From Ipanema”. A final release worth of Amy Winehouse.

HaLo: “The Blind Poet”. With so many projects being released from the Jamla camp on a frequent basis, It’s hard to keep any single release in your sights for a proper amount of time. This is the 2nd compilation that HaLo dropped this year, so I was expecting more 2nd tier trax that didn’t make it on Head Writer II. But “Lines” featuring Rapsody and “Bussin’” featuring 9th Wonder quelled those thoughts.

Will Session: “The Elmatic Instrumentals”.These instrumental versions from Elzhi’s “Elmatic” project are more powerful on their own. the shear detail he put into each song is amazing. Even things like skips and oddities in DJ Premier’s original “Illmatic” songs were recreated in acoustic form. This is the background flow of the year.
